T.R. STANDS FOR ONE FLAG, ONE ALLEGIANCE & ONE LANGUAGE

JFK+50:  Volume 7, No. 2444

T.R. DEMANDS ONE DEVOTION

Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) One hundred years ago, September 26, 1917, Theodore Roosevelt, speaking before a crowd of 12,000 at Dexter Pavilion here in Chicago, demanded "one language and one devotion."

The Spanish-American War hero and former President of the United States said...

"I stand for one flag, one allegiance, and one language--the language of the Declaration of Independence, of Washington's farewell address, and of Lincoln's Gettysburg address."

The Chicago Daily Tribune reported that the Colonel "pilloried the German language newspapers (and) denounced pacifists as human cowards."

T.R. mentioned David Starr Jordan* and classified him with the "old women...of both sexes."  He said...

"The pacifist has not one quality that entitles him to the admiration of one honorable man."

*David Starr Jordan (1851-1931) was born in Gainesville, NY & graduated from Cornell University in 1872 with a Masters degree in botany.  DSJ did graduate studies at Butler University & became professor of zoology at Indiana University in 1879.
