VIETNAM MORATORIUM DAY OBSERVED 48 YEARS AGO

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) Forty-eight years ago, October 15, 1969, Vietnam Moratorium Day was observed in protest of the war.  The day was marked by religious services, educational seminars and rallies held around the country.

The BBC estimates there were 2 million participants making it "perhaps the largest demonstration in U.S. history."

The focus of the protests was in here in the Nation's Capital where Dr. Benjamin Spock* called the war "a total abomination."  250,000 protesters gathered at the Capitol.

In Boston, Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) said...

"I...believe the nation is in danger of committing itself to goals and personalities that guarantee the war's continuance."


*Benjamin McLane Spock (1903-1998) was born in New Haven, Connecticut & graduated 1st in his class at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1929.  One of the best known American physicians of the 20th century, Dr. Spock wrote a best-selling book titled "Baby & Child Care" in 1946.
