JFK GETS GWU DEGREE LONG AFTER JACKIE DID

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 3, 1961, President John F. Kennedy was presented with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from The George Washington University*.

In accepting the honorary degree, JFK noted that his wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in French Literature in 1951.

The President quipped...

"My wife beat me to this honor by about 8 or 9 years.  It took her 2 years to get this degree and it took me 2 minutes."

*The George Washington University was created by the United States Congress in 1821 as Columbian College.   GWU's main campus at Foggy Bottom is "nestled between the White House, the Kennedy Center and a number of federal & international agencies."

The college was the dream of President Washington to have a national university in the District of Columbia.  The name was changed to Columbian University & in 1904 became The George Washington University.
