ALL WHO HAVE SAILED ARE THE BENEFICIARIES OF THE SERVICE OF THE COAST GUARD

JFK SPEAKS HIGHLY OF THE USCG

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 15, 1962, President John F. Kennedy spoke on the United States Coast Guard Barque Eagle on Pier 2 at the Navy Yard Annex here in the Nation's Capital.

The President first reviewed the cadets and observed a demonstration of the manning of the yardarms and the lines.

President Kennedy said...

"I think the American people have been too long unaware of the high quality and high caliber of the cadets of the Coast Guard.  There is not anyone who has sailed...who has not...been the beneficiary of the faithful service of the Coast Guard."

The event took place at 10:30 a.m. Washington time and was attended by Douglas Dillon, Secretary of the Treasury, Willard J. Smith, Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, and Edwin J. Roland, Commandant of the USCG.
