JFK SPEAKS AT LOS ALAMOS

JFK RELAXES AT PALM SPRINGS AT END OF WESTERN TOUR

Palm Springs, California (JFK+50) On December 9, 1962, President John F. Kennedy awoke at the home of Bing Crosby here in Palm Springs and later attended mass at Sacred Heart Church. 

The President's western tour began at Offutt AFB in Nebraska on December 7th where he toured the headquarters of Strategic Air Command.  From there he went to Santa Fe, New Mexico and inspected the facilities at Los Alamos.

JFK spoke at the Los Alamos High School's* Sullivan Stadium where he said...

"We express our thanks to you...not only in developing weapons...which...help maintain the peace and freedom, but also in medicine and in space..."

In Albuquerque, he received a briefing on atomic energy research at the Sandia Corporation** facilities and lodged at the Western Skies Motel.  On December 8th JFK visited Indians Springs AFB and the A.E.C.'s nuclear rocket development station in Jackson Flats, Nevada.  The President then arrived here in Palm Springs.
         
*Los Alamos High School, 1300 Diamond Drive, Los Alamos, NM opened in 1946 supported by the Atomic Energy Commission.  The school has been visited by two POTUS, JFK & Bill Clinton.

**Sandia National Laboratories, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, develops, engineers and tests the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons.  Established in 1948, the company is home of the Z Machine, the largest X-ray generator in the world.
