Plains, Georgia (JFK+50) Today, March 22, 2019, Jimmy Carter* officially became the longest-living former President of the United States in history. Mr. Carter is 94 years plus 172 days old. The previous longest-living former POTUS had been George H.W. Bush.
Despite a troubled presidency, Jimmy Carter negotiated a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel that stands as a major accomplishment. He was defeated for re-election in 1980 by Ronald Reagan.
Brian Williams of NBC News acknowledges that while Mr. Carter "routinely gets low marks," his post-presidential years have been the "most exemplary in American history."
*James Earl Carter, Jr. was born in Plains, GA on Oct 1, 1924. He was the 1st POTUS born in a hospital & was educated at Plains HS, Georgia Tech & the US Naval Academy. After his service in the USN he was Georgia State Senator (1963-1967), Governor of Georgia (1971-1975) & POTUS (1977-1981).
JEC was defeated for re-election in 1980 by the Reagan landslide. In 1982, he founded the Carter Center in Atlanta to advance human rights & alleviate human suffering.
