"ONLY MR. SCIENCE & MR. DEMOCRACY CAN BRING SALVATION"

CHINESE STUDENTS DENOUNCE INEPTITUDE OF NATIONALIST GOVERNMENT

Beijing, China (JFK+50) On May 4, 1919, thousands of students protested the decision of the Versailles Peace Conference to permit Japan to occupy former German concessions in China.  The students, gathering in front of the Gate of Heavenly Peace*, "denounced imperial aggression and the ineptitude of the Nationalist government."

The students called for "Mr. Science" and "Mr. Democracy" to save their country.  Chen Duxiu**, leader of the New Culture Movement, said...

"We believe only these two gentlemen (Mr. Science & Mr. Democracy) can bring salvation from all the darkness in China."

*The Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen  Tower) is the official emblem of the People's Republic of China.  It is located at the northern edge of Tiananmen Square in Beijing.  The GHP was the main entrance to the Imperial Palace during the Ming & Qing dynasties.
