EXTRA EXTRA LARGE MARINE SERGEANT RE-ENLISTS
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On November 24, 1921, the Evening Star reports the re-enlistment in the United States Marine Corps of Gunnery Sergeant James D. Turreziani of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Sergeant, dubbed "Devil Dog" by the Star, is described as being six feet tall and weighing 335 pounds.
The re-enlistment of Turreziani "is hailed with delight in all departments except the quartermasters'*." The good Sergeant wears size 12 shoes.
On a recent forty-mile hike in Haiti, "he finished with two rifles, three packs and one exhausted recruit under his arm."
*Quartermaster is a senior soldier who supervises stores or barracks & distributes supplies & provisions.
