PRESIDENT ENJOYING BENEFIT OF FLORIDA VACATION
New Smyrna, Florida (JFK+50) On March 12, 1922, the Evening Star reports that President Warren G. Harding's physician, Brigadier General Charles E. Sawyer* says the Chief Executive's benefit of a Florida vacation "is already evident."
The President and First Lady have been staying aboard a houseboat owned by E.B. McLean**, publisher of The Washington Post.
President Harding made a motor trip to New Smyrna for a round of golf and then continued his cruise down Florida's East Coast.
*Charles Edward Sawyer (1860-1924) was born in Wyandot, Ohio & was a graduate of Cleveland Homeopathic Hospital College. As WGH's personal physician, he never accepted payment for his services.
**E.B. McLean (1889-1941) publisher of TWP 1916-1933. His grandfather, Washington McLean, is the namesake for McLean, VA. EBM was involved in the Teapot Dome scandal with his close relationship with Secretary of Interior Albert B. Fall.
