SENATOR NEW UPSET IN INDIANA REPUBLICAN PRIMARY
Indianapolis, Indiana (JFK+50) On May 3, 1922, incumbent Senator Harry S. New* (R-Indiana) was defeated in the Indiana Republican Primary by former Senator Albert J. Beveridge**.
The Associated Press reports New's margin was 18,235 with only a tenth of the votes yet to count.
Carter Field says that the outcome "was a tremendous surprise to men of all shades of political opinion in Washington."
Democrats, who expect to make substantial gains in the Senate in the Fall, see it as "a strong drift away from the old leadership of the Republican party."
According to Field, the defeat of New is a "bitter blow" to President Warren G. Harding who is close friends with Senator New.
