"SOLE SURVIVORS OF APRIL 1865 NY CEREMONIES"

HONORED GUESTS AT LINCOLN MEMORIAL DEDICATION ARE CHAUNCEY DEPEW & A.J. KANE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 21, 1922 a special dispatch to the New York Herald states that "when the Lincoln Memorial is dedicated here on May 30, two of the honor guests will be...Chauncey M. Depew* and Lt. Col. A. J. Kane."

Mr. Depew and Mr. Kane are the "sole surviving officials" who took part in ceremonies held in New York City on April 25, 1865 when the body of the 16th POTUS passed through on its way to burial in Springfield, Illinois.

JFK+50 NOTE

The three main speakers at the May 30 1922 dedication were Chief Justice William Howard Taft, President Harding and Dr. Robert Moton, principal of Tuskegee Institute, 1915-1935. 

*Chauncey Mitchell Depew (1834-1928) was born in Peekskill, New York & graduated Yale University, 1856.  CMP served as Secretary of State, New York 1864-1865 & U.S. Senate (R-NY) 1899-1911.  He was also an attorney for Cornelius Vanderbilt & president of the NY Central Railroad.
