400 YEAR OLD TREASURE CHEST LOST IN WYE RIVER TO BE RAISED
Penetanguishene*, Ontario (JFK+50) On June 14, 1922, the Evening Star reported "a treasure chest lost in the river Wye**...nearly four centuries ago has been located...and divers were working...to bring the ancient box to the surface."
The chest was one of seven brought to New France in 1750 by Jesuit missionaries. The treasure was being transported by canoe when it was lost in the river.
The contents of the treasure chest included "solid gold vestments...and gold coin to pay the troops which accompanied the mission."
*Penetanguishene (land of the white rolling sands) is a town in Simcoe County, Ontario located on the southeastern tip of Georgian Bay. It was incorporated in 1882.
**Wye River is a stream located near Tiffin Basin & Wireless Hill in Ontario, Canada.
