NEW YORK SOCIETY WOMEN TAKE FANCY TO FLYING
New York City (JFK+50) On July 12, 1922, the Evening Star reports that "wealthy New Yorkers have taken a fancy to flying."
Mrs. J. Norman de R. Whitehouse flew the previous evening from Newport, Rhode Island to New York at a speed of more than 100 mph.
Mrs. Whitehouse, accompanied by her husband and Bertram de N. Cruger, flew Vincent Astor*'s hydro-monoplane. The flight of 125 miles took an hour and twenty minutes.
The Star reports Harold S. Vanderbilt** often flies to Southampton to play golf and recently flew to "witness the final Yale-Harvard baseball game."
*William Vincent Astor (1891-1959) was born in NYC son of John J. Astor IV. WVA attended Harvard & inherited the family fortune when his father died on the Titanic. He served in USN in WWI & WWII.
**Harold Stirling Vanderbilt (1884-1970) was born in Oakdale, NY & became a railroad executive, champion yachtsman & contract bridge champion. HSV attended Harvard Law School 1907-1910.
