"PRESIDENT LODGES AT SUMMIT HOUSE"

HARDING & PERSHING COMPLETE 2ND LEG OF AUTO TRIP FROM WASHINGTON TO MARION

Uniontown, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On July 3, 1922, the New York Tribune reports President Warren G. Harding arrived last evening here in Uniontown* "completing the second leg of his journey by automobile from Washington to Marion..."

The President and his party, which includes General John J. Pershing, will lodge at Summit House**, a "top" resort hotel in the Allegheny Mountains.

Before arriving at the hotel, the President and General called on the "desperately" ill Senator William E. Crow*** at his summer home, Chalk Hill.

The President and his guests plan to arrive in Marion on the Fourth.

*Uniontown is located in Fayette County, PA, 46 miles SE of Pittsburgh.  Ft. Necessity, the opening battle of the French & Indian War, is 11 miles SE of Uniontown.  It is the birthplace of General George C. Marshall.

**Summit House, located on Chestnut Hill, opened in 1907.  SH is one of the last remaining grand porch hotels in America.  The original hotel register dates back to 1917.

***William Evans Crow (1870-1922) was born in German Township, PA & graduated from Waynesboro College.  WEC was a newspaper report & editor before serving in the Pennsylvania State Senate 1907-1921.  He was appointed U.S. Senator in 1921 & served until his death.
