LIVELY DEBATE IN JAPAN ON MORALITY OF WESTERN DANCING
Tokyo, Japan (JFK+50) On July 16, 1922, the Evening Star reports that Japanese newspapers are having a "lively debate" on "the question whether western dances are immoral."
In the Associated Press story, we learn that western dancing has recently become popular among the women of Japan.
"They dance very gracefully in their native costume and heelless slippers."
It seems the older generation, however, "frown on the growing custom"
While the geisha* declare western dancing immoral, young Japanese men prefer dancing themselves rather than watching geisha dancing.
*Geisha: a Japanese hostess trained to entertain men with conversation, dance & song.
