"TO GO FORWARD ALONG THE PATH OF PEACE"

HARDING CONGRATULATES EBERT ON FOUNDING OF GERMAN REPUBLIC ANNIVERSARY

 Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 11, 1922, President Warren G. Harding congratulated President Friedrich Ebert* "upon the anniversary of the founding of the German republic**."

President Harding's cablegram to the German president states...

"I am happy to express to you my sincere good wishes and my hope that the great German republic may steadily go forward along the path of peace which leads to good understanding and prosperity and happiness."

*Friedrich Ebert (1871-1925), born in Heidelberg, served as a member of the Reichstag 1912-1918.  FE played a pivotal role in the German revolution of 1918-1919 & was president of Germany 1919-1925.

**Weimar Republic (1918-1933) was a constitutional federal republic.  Its first two years were marked by hyperinflation & political extremism but by 1924 relative prosperity was restored.
