"CONGRESS CLOSES IN SHROUD OF FAILURE"

HARDING SIGNS SIX 'LAST MINUTE' BILLS ON CAPITOL HILL

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On September 22, 1922, President Warren G. Harding made a quick trip down Pennsylvania Avenue to Capitol Hill  to sign some "last minute" legislation.

The New York Tribune reports the President signed six measures including the Deficiency Appropriation Bill which provides $200,000 for relief of Americans who suffered at Smyrna*.

Senator Pat Harrison** (D-Mississippi) declared the second long session of the 67th Congress was closing "in a shroud of...failure and broken pledges."

*Smyrna Catastrophe:  Sept 13-22, 1922 a fire broke out in Smyrna after Turkish forces captured the city. 80,000 to 400,000 Greek & American refugees were forced to stay at the waterfront for 2 weeks to escape the fire.

**Byron Patton "Pat" Harrison (1881-1941) was born in Crystal Springs, Mississippi & opened his law practice in 1902.  BPH served in US House of Representatives 1911-1919 & US Senate 1919-1941.  He was chairman of the Senate Finance Committee 1933-1941.
