FRENCH PRESIDENT SAFE AT TIME OF 'ASSASSINATION' ATTEMPT
Paris, France (JFK+50) On September 8, 1922, a shot was fired but missed an automobile "in front of the palace of the Elysee*" here in Paris.
The shooter, 19 year old George Salem, an Egyptian student, thought that French President Alexandre Millerand** was inside the vehicle.
As the would-be assassin fired his pistol, he was seized by a security guard. The quick response by the guard caused Salem to collapse.
The Star reports that President Millerand was safely in residence at his country estate in Rambouillet*** at the time of the incident.
*Elysee Palace is the official residence of the President of the French Republic. Completed in 1722, it is also home of the Council of Ministers.
**Alexandre Millerand (1859-1943) was born in Paris & served as Minister of War 1912-1913, 1914-1915, Prime Minister Jan-Sept 1920 & President 1920-1924.
***Rambouillet is a subprefecture of the Yvelines department located outside of Paris. R is famous for its historic castle, Chateau de Rambouillet.
