"AN ATTRIBUTE OF A PERFECT LADY"

DR. GARDNER SAYS WOMEN EMPLOYEES BETTER OFF AS SMOKERS

Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) On October 18, 1922, the president of the Association of Railroad Chief Surgeons*, Dr. Paul E. Gardner, said that tobacco use is "an attribute of a perfect lady."

Dr. Gardner was speaking to delegates of the organization's annual convention meeting here in the Windy City.

The good doctor added...

"Women employees will be better off if they work out their difficulties over a cigarette."

*To meet the demand for medical care for railroad employees working in remote areas, the railroad became an early adopter of employer based health care.
