"CAPTAIN WASHED OVERBOARD BY MOUNTAINOUS SEA"

BRITISH FREIGHTER LOSES SKIPPER IN STORM

New York City (JFK+50) On October 11, 1922, the New York Tribune reports the British freighter Glenn Fuss arrived at Staten Island "minus her skipper."

The 7500 ton vessel out of Immingham*, England encountered a severe storm four days out to sea.  A massive wave wreaked havoc with the hatches and bulwarks.

On September 25, Captain Robert S. Stopher** "started aft to investigate the damage and was washed overboard by a mountainous sea."

*Immingham is situated on the SW bank of the Humber Estuary.  Its port, along with the nearby port of Grimsby, was the largest port in the UK in 2019.

**Robert S. Stopher was born in Glasgow & went to sea at age 12.  He was one of the best known skippers in England.  RSS's only survivor was his wife.
