NEW WORLD'S RECORD SET FOR GLIDING WITH PASSENGER
New Haven, England (JFK+50) On October 21, 1922, G.R. Olley "made the world's record for gliding with a passenger." Flying in a Fokker Biplane, the pair were in the air 49 minutes.
The feat was accomplished in a gliding competition held at Itford Hill*.
The record that was broken had been set on August 27, 1922 by Dutch airplane inventor Anthony H.G. Fokker**.
*Itford Hill: site of the first British gliding meeting.
**Anton Herman Gerard "Anthony" Fokker (1890-1939) was born in the Dutch East Indies & became an aviation pioneer, aircraft designer & manufacturer. AF produced fighter planes in Germany during WWII & moved to the U.S. in the late 1920s.
