"NEW ERA IN AMERICAN SYSTEM OF DEFENSE"

SUCCESSFUL ANTI-AIRCRAFT FIRING TESTS CONDUCTED AT FORT MONROE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) In a special dispatch to the New York Herald dated November 29, 1922, "a new era in the development of the American system of defense against attack from the air" has been achieved in recent anti-aircraft firing tests conducted at Fort Monroe*, Virginia by the War Department.

In the tests, five of twenty-two shots were placed "within destructive range" of a target "moving 80 mph at the end of a 2500 foot cable fastened to (a) plane." 

At no time was there any danger to the plane.

*Fort Monroe (Virginia) was completed in 1834 & named in honor of President James Monroe.  It is the largest stone fort ever built in the U.S.  Its walls extend 1.3 miles & cover 63 acres.
