"NO WOMAN SHOULD USE HER SEX AS A WEAPON"

MS. SPENCER CRITICAL OF ALICE PAUL'S CHARACTERIZATION OF WOMEN VOTERS

Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) On November 10, 1922, Mary Belle Spencer*, "a defeated candidate in the Illinois primaries last spring,"criticized Alice Paul for her comment that women do not vote for women.

Ms. Spencer, an attorney here in the Windy City, expressed the view that no woman should use her sex "as a weapon in a political contest with men."

Mrs. Winnifred Mason Huck**, however, said that Ms. Paul "is right about women...stand(ing) by women if they ever intend to get the new place in the sun."

*Mary Belle Spencer was also outspoken on the failures of public education.  She refused to allow her teenage daughters to attend public schools saying, "the law has no power to regiment them."

**Winnifred Sprague Mason Huck (1882-1936) served in the U.S. Congress, 1921-1923 (R-Illinois), she was the 1st wife & mother elected to the body.
