"THE REAL PLACE OF WOMAN IS IN THE FAMILY"

WOMAN'S SUFFRAGE DIES "NATURAL DEATH" IN FRENCH SENATE

Paris, France (JFK+50) On November 16, 1922, woman's suffrage "died a natural death" in the Senate of the Republic of France after having passed the Chamber of Deputies* a few weeks before.

Senator Alexander Bernard affirmed the view that...

"the real place of woman is in the family, not in Parliament."

*The Chamber of Deputies has been known as the National Assembly since 1958.  The body is made up of "deputies" or delegates (translation).  The French Republic has a bicameral legislature with the Senate being the other governing body.

JFK+50 NOTE

Women of France gained the right to vote by legislation taking effect on April 21, 1944.  They were able to exercise that right for the first time on April 29, 1945, the first general election since the end of Nazi occupation.
