"TO TAKE THE PLACE OF JUSTICE WILLIAM DAY"

PIERCE BUTLER NOMINATED TO U.S. SUPREME COURT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On November 23, 1922, President Warren G. Harding nominated Pierce Butler* of St. Paul, Minnesota "as an associate justice of the Supreme Court."

Mr. Butler, a Democrat, will "take the place made vacant by the resignation of Associate Justice (William R.)Day."  He is currently a member of the Powell, Butler and Mitchell law firm of St. Paul and has represented "an important group of railroads."

*Pierce Butler (1866-1939) was born in Dakota County, Minnesota.  His parents were immigrants from Ireland.  PB graduated from Carleton College and was admitted to the bar in 1888.  He served on the USSC 1923-1939 as a staunch conservative.
