"HARDING GIVES OLD JOE A LARGE BLACK CIGAR"

FORMER SPEAKER CANNON & CONGRESSMAN STEDMAN "CHEER UP" THE PRESIDENT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On December 16, 1922, former Speaker of the House of Representatives "Uncle" Joe Cannon, along with Congressman C.M. Stedman* (D-North Carolina) "cheered up" President Warren G. Harding who, in return, presented Old Joe with a large black cigar.

After conferring with the President, Mr. Cannon said...

"We thought that Mr. Harding was getting lonely and we merely called to cheer him up and I think we succeeded..."

*Charles Manly Stedman (1841-1930) was born in Pittsboro, North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1861.  CMS served as a Major in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War.  He served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1911-1930.
