"NO LONGER HAS A FEVER, APPETITE HAS RETURNED"

PRESIDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO RETURN TO DESK MONDAY

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On January 20, 1923, President Warren G. Harding, according to the reporting of The Evening Star, "has improved sufficiently from his attack of grip (influenza)" to be able to return to work on Monday.  So hopes the President's physician Brigadier General Charles E. Sawyer*.

For today, however, Mr. Harding will be confined to his room although he no longer has a fever, "and his appetite has returned."

Last evening, the President and First Lady enjoyed an hour long radio program "furnished by the United States Navy Band Orchestra" and transmitted from the naval station at Arlington.

The Star reports two of the musical selections included "The End of a Perfect Day," and "The President Harding March."

JFK+50 NOTE

"A Perfect Day" is a parlor song written in 1909 by Carrie Jacobs-Bond. "President Harding March" by Paul Crane was published in 1920.  The lyrics begin with...

"Uncle Sam you have chosen a real man,

For he is the best, stood the test, a regular American."

*Charles Elmer Sawyer (1860-1924) was born in Wyandot, Ohio & graduated from Cleveland Homeopathic College.  CES was Director of the Marion National Bank & served as personal physician for both President & Mrs. Harding.
