"NO RUNNING ALLOWED"

82 YEAR OLD CIVIL WAR VETS FACE OFF IN WRESTLING MATCH

Oklahoma City (JFK+50) On January 8, 1923, the Evening Star reports "the outcome of the civil war...and all...subjects of a controversial character to date, are to be settled...(in Oklahoma City) tomorrow" in an old fashioned wrestling match.

The participants will be Sam H Hargis, a Confederate veteran, and Samuel C. Armstrong, a Union veteran, who are both 82 years young.

The Star reports that there will be no running allowed in the match although Mr. Hargis admits Mr. Armstrong is faster because "he got away unscathed from the first Battle of Bull Run*."

*First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) was fought on July 21, 1861 in Virginia about 30 miles west/southwest of Washington, D.C.  According to history.com, a Confederate counter-attack sent the green Union troops "into a chaotic retreat."

JFK+50 NOTE

They call it the FIRST Battle of Bull Run because another battle was fought at the same place later in the war.  First and Second Bull Run are also known as First and Second Manassas, the town nearest the battlefield.  Bull Run is the name of the creek that Union troops crossed to launch their attack and then back again in retreat.
