MAINE LEGISLATOR OFFERS ESTATE AS SUMMER HOME FOR THE PRESIDENT
Augusta, Maine (JFK+50) On January 6, 1923, Sherman Douglass of Lamoine* announced his willingness to offer his estate, Shore Acres, "as a summer home for the president of the United States."
Mr. Douglass, a member of the Maine state legislature, owns the estate located six miles from Bar Harbor.
*Lamoine is a town located in Hancock County, Maine named after early resident Andre LeMoyne. The name changed over time to Lamoine which translates from French to "the monk." Population of the town in 1920 was 327. The 2020 population was 1,720.
