FIVE STATESMEN AT GENOA CONFERENCE HAVE MET DEATH BY VIOLENCE
Berlin, Germany (JFK+50) On June 16, 1923, the Associated Press reports the former Premier of Bulgaria, Aleksandar Stamboliyski* "is the fifth statesman among those who participated in the Genoa conference**...to meet a violent death."
Three of the five statesmen, the Premier of Poland, the Foreign Minister of Germany and a Russian diplomat, were assassinated. The former premier of Greece was executed by revolutionists.
The AP also reports delegates of most of the western powers who attended the Genoa conference have since been removed from office.
*Aleksandar Stamboliyski (1879-1923) was born in Slavovitsa, Bulgaria & became a member of the Agrarian Union. AS was court martialed & sentenced to life imprisonment for opposing Bulgaria joining the Central Powers in WWI.
He was released in 1919 & became prime minister. AS served 1919-1923. His government was overthrown, he was taken prisoner, tortured & murdered, June 14, 1923.
**Genoa conference (April 10-May 19, 1922) met in Italy to discuss economic reconstruction of central & eastern Europe & to explore ways to improve relations between Soviet Russia & capitalist Europe.
