"SCHOONER HEADING TO THE ARCTIC"

WIRELESS TRANSMISSION FROM THE BOWDOIN RECEIVED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY

Hartford, Connecticut (JFK+50) On June 25, 1923, The Evening Star reports that yesterday's radio transmission from the Bowdoin, a tiny schooner carrying Dr. Donald B. MacMillan* and his party to the Arctic, was successfully received "by hundreds of amateur stations throughout the country."

The transmission was made by 21 year old wireless operator Donald H. Mix who reported the Bowdoin has put into Boothbay Harbor and is about to depart for Halifax this morning.

*Donald Baxter Macmillan (1874-1970) was born in Provincetown, Massachusetts & graduated from Bowdoin College of Brunswick, 1898.  During his 46 year career, DBM pioneered the use of radios, airplanes & electricity in the Arctic.
