FORMER SUPREME COURT JUSTICE WILLIAM R. DAY DEAD AT 73
Mackinac Island*, Michigan (JFK+50) On July 9, 1923, William R. Day**, former associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, passed away at his cottage here in Michigan.
Mr. Day, 73 years of age, had been here two weeks attempting to recover from a fall attack of bronchitis followed by a general decline in his health.
The former justice's son and daughter-in-law were with him at the time of death. The body will be taken to Canton, Ohio for burial. The judge was a close personal friend of President William McKinley who brought him to Washington to work in the State Department.
*Mackinac Island sits in Lake Huron between Michigan's upper & lower peninsulas. Fort Mackinac was founded in 1780 & is today home to Mackinac Island State Park.
**William Rufus Day (1849-1923) was born in Ravenna, Ohio & graduated from the University of Michigan, 1870 & attended UM Law School. WRD worked as a criminal defense & corporate lawyer 25 years before serving as McKinley's Secretary of State & his nomination to the USSC by President Theodore Roosevelt.
