A FEW DAYS ON THE ROCK PILE CONVINCING TO MEN CONVICTED OF NON-SUPPORT
Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On July 24, 1923, the Associated Press reports "the stone quarry at Deer Island* municipal house of corrections has been reopened to provide employment for prisoners convicted of non-support of their families."
The Evening Star says that Institutions Commissioner David I. Johnson said today that after a few days working on the rock pile these slackers usually file written guarantees to share their earnings with their spouses after they are released.
*Deer Island is a peninsula in Boston, MA. Today 2/3 of which comprises the Deer Island Waste Water Treatment Plant. In 1850, an almshouse was built here to house paupers. In 1896, it became home for short-term prisoners.
