"THE SENATOR ROSE TO HIS FEET & APOLOGIZED"

SENATOR FERRIS ADMONISHED BY JUDGE FOR SMILING IN COURT

Grand Rapids, Michigan (JFK+50) On July 14, 1923, The Evening Star reports that yesterday Senator Woodbridge N. Ferris* "was rebuked by a circuit court judge and told he would be removed from the courtroom if he did not conduct himself properly."

The Senator, known as 'the good, gray governor', was attending a hearing in which his son and daughter-in-law were principles.

During Mrs. Ferris's testimony, the Senator was smiling during each question and answer.  The interrupted the questioning to address remarks directly to the Senator threatening to have him removed from the courtroom for improper behavior.

The Senator rose to his feet and apologized to the judge.

*Woodbridge Nathan Ferris (1853-1928) was born in Spencer, New York & attended the University of Michigan.  WNF served as govenor of Michigan 1913-1917 & U.S. Senator (D-Michigan) 1923-1928.
