"A HALF-MILLION LETTERS AT 25 CENTS EACH"

AIRMAIL SERVICE TO EUROPE VIA ZEPPELIN TO BEGIN SOON

Berlin, Germany (JFK+50) On November 28, 1924, the Associated Press reports that a weekly mail service via Zeppelin will begin soon between the United States and Europe.  This was relayed to AP by Dr. Hugo Eckner*, Zeppelin Company director.

The mail delivery will not, at this time, include passenger service.

An airship can carry a half million letters per trip and at a cost of 25 cents per letter should insure "business success."

The AP also reports the United States Postal Service has been studying the possibility of using Zeppelins for overseas mail delivery but as of yet have taken "no definite steps" to implement it.

JFK+50 NOTE

Direct airmail service via Zeppelin between the U.S. & Germany came in September 1929.  By 1937, the Graf Zeppelin had made 590 flights carrying 12 tons of mail.

Happy Thanksgiving 2024 to all our readers. The holiday dates back to 1863 & is celebrated in the United States, Canada, Saint Lucia, Liberia & unofficially in Brazil, Germany & the Philippines.

*Hugo Eckner (1868-1954) was born in Flensburg in northern Germany.  He became manager of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin Company during the years between WWI & WWII.

HE commanded the Graf Zeppelin for most of its record-setting flights & is considered the most successful airship commander in history.
