"A SHOCK TO THE WASHINGTON COMMUNITY"

SENATOR MCCORMICK FOUND DEAD

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On February 25, 1925, The Washington Times reports Senator Medill McCormick* (R-Illinois) died here in the Nation's Capital at "his apartment in the Hamilton Hotel."

The Senator, who had been in relatively good health, was found dead in his bed by hotel management.  Dr. Noble Barnes gave the cause of death as the result of a "gastric hemorrhage."

The news of Senator McCormick's passing came as a shock to the Washington community.  He had lost his bid for re-election to the Senate but was under consideration "for appointment as US ambassador to Paris."

Senator Selden P. Spencer (R-Missouri) called Medill McCormick "one of the most outstanding...members" of the United States Senate.

*Joseph Medill McCormick (1877-1925) was born in Chicago, Illinois & became owner of The Chicago Daily Tribune.  JMM served as a war correspondent in the Philippines.  He married Ruth Hanna, daughter of Ohio Senator Mark Hanna.  JMM served in the US House of Representatives 1917-1919 & US Senate 1919-1925.

JFK+50 NOTE

Senator Selden P. Spencer passed away three months later (May 9, 1925) after suffering complications of hernia surgery.
