D.C. JOB SEEKERS 'GOUGED' BY EMPLOYMENT AGENCIES
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On March 22, 1925, The Sunday Star reports that independent employment agencies in the Nation's Capital are charging job seekers ten to twelve times the legal rate set by the Congress of the United States.
Its' report states...
"The law provides that no fees in excess of $2.00 may be charged."
The issue was made known when a young girl wrote a letter to The Star telling of being charged "a bonus of $22.50 for a job that paid $90 a month."
In her letter, the girl wrote...
"These (agencies) came into existence during the world war and they have flourished like green bay trees ever since."
