NOTED PRISON AUTHOR DIES OF TUBERCULOSIS
Phoenix, Arizona (JFK+50) On June 25, 1925, noted prison author Donald Lowrie* died of tuberculosis while in the care of friends here in Phoenix.
Mr. Lowrie, working on his latest book, had been released from the Arizona State Penitentiary less than two weeks ago. He is best known for his first book published in 1912 titled "My Life in Prison."
Donald Lowrie was down and out in San Francisco when he broke into a home and stole a watch and purse containing $60. For this one crime, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison but was released on good behavior 5 years early.
*Donald Lowrie (1875-1925) was born in Pennsylvania & worked as a bookkeeper, stenographer & traveling salesman. DL became an advocate for prison reform after publishing a book on his experiences.
