"COOLIDGE REFUSES TO PLAY WITH SOCIAL CLIQUE"

PRESIDENT WILL NOT PARTICIPATE IN NORTH SHORE'S SUMMER SEASON

Swampscott, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On July 5, 1925, The Sunday Star reports that President Calvin Coolidge "has shaken the social foundations" of the North Shore* community "by his public refusal to participate in the activities of the Summer season."

According to the Star's report, tongues have been set "wagging from Newport to Bar Harbor" in regard to Mr. Coolidge's attitude.

John Coolidge, the President's son, will be wearing overalls at Plymouth while doing chores instead of donning dinner jackets while dancing at the Essex Country Club**.  He will be likely seen playing checkers with neighbors instead of listening to jazz bands.

The President and First Lady have turned down numerous invitations to North Shore homes.  Although the Coolidges have been coming to this area for years, they were always "overlooked as a social possibility."

Now that Mr. Coolidge is President of the United States and an "outstanding world figure," North Shore society would "love to open their doors to him," but he refuses "to play with the social clique."

*North Shore is the seacoast between Boston & New Hampshire which is considered an important historical, cultural & economic region of Massachusetts.  NS includes Beverly, Danvers, Essex, Gloucester, Salem & Swampscott.

**Essex Country Club, which opened in 1893,  is located at 153 School Street in Manchester, Massachusetts.  It had the first 9 hole golf course in New England & is listed today as one of the top 100 golf courses.
