SYSTEM USING CHLORINE FOR DISTRICT BEACHES PROPOSED
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) The Sunday Star reports on September 13, 1925 "only the judicious use of chlorine* made the waters of the Tidal Basin safe for bathers (so) exactly the same system is proposed for the beaches planned along the Potomac and the Anacostia Rivers here in the Nation's Capital.
The new system, pending approval by the Public Health Service, is upheld by Lt. Col. Clarence O. Sherrill**.
According to a recent Public Health survey, "a diluted solution of chlorine is required to kill the bacteria and bacilli found...in the Potomac."
*chlorine is essential for making clean drinking water & is also used in swimming pools, spas, sewage & industrial waste.
**Lt. Col. Clarence Osborne Sherrill (1876-1959) was born in Newton, NC & graduated from USMA majoring in civil engineering. COS was military aide to TR, served in France in WWI, & was chief military aide to President Harding. Later, he was city manager of Cincinnati, Ohio.
