"THE WEAVERS, FOUNDED BY PETE SEEGER IN 1948"

FOLK MUSIC GROUP CANCELLED FOR REFUSING TO TAKE LOYALTY OATH

New York City (JFK+50) The scheduled appearance of the folk singing group "The Weavers" on The Jack Parr television show was cancelled on January 2, 1962 when every member of the group refused to sign a loyalty oath.

The Weavers, founded in 1948 by Pete Seeger*, were responsible for a resurgence in the popularity of folk music in the 1950s and 1960s.

*Peter 'Pete' Seeger (1919-2014) was born in New York City & became a champion of left-wing causes, civil rights & environmentalism.  PS was an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War.  

One of his best-known songs is "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," popularized by Peter, Paul & Mary & the Kingston Trio.
