CONGRESS ESTABLISHES WAR OFFICE
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On June 14, 1776, John Hancock* wrote in a letter to General George Washington...
"The establishing a War Office is a new and great Event in the History of America. The Congress have only laid a foundation at present.
It still remains...to erect a System of Regulations and Laws that will enable us to carry on our military operations with more Knowledge, Certainty and Dispatch."
JFK+50 NOTE
First known as the Board of War and the War Office, the War Department existed from 1789 to 1947. It then became the Department of Defense until President Trump had it changed back to the War Department.
*John Hancock (1737-1793) was born in Braintree, Massachusetts & graduated Harvard College in 1754. JH inherited a profitable mercantile business from his uncle & became one of the wealthiest men in the colonies.
JH served as president of the Second Continental Congress 1775-1777 & 1785-1786. He was governor of Massachusetts 1780-1785 & 1787-1793.
JH is remembered most for being the first signer of the Declaration of Independence in writing large enough "for King George III to read it without his glasses."
