U.S. GRANTED PERMISSION TO CONTRACT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF GIANT ZEPPELIN
Paris (JFK+50) On December 17, 1921, the Council of Ambassadors granted permission to the United States "to contract for the construction...of a Zeppelin* of the L-70 type."
The airship, larger than the ZR-1, will be built at Friedrichshafen**, Germany.
The application for construction by the United States arose from the claim that "it was entitled to another airship under Germany's reparations agreement."
*Zeppelin: a type of rigid airship named after Ferdinand von Zeppelin. Patented in Germany in 1895 & U.S. in 1899.
**Friedrichshafen is a city located on Lake Constance in Southern Germany near the Swiss-Austrian border. It is known for its aviation history which is documented in the Zeppelin Museum.
