FIRST LADY DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL, PRESIDENT ACCOMPANIES HER TO FAMILY HOME

Hyannis Port, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On August 14, 1963, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy was discharged from the hospital and was accompanied by the President in a helicopter flight to their summer home near Hyannis Port.

As Mrs. Kennedy stepped out of Otis AFB Hospital, she held the President's hand and managed a smile for those gathered outside.

The Evening Star reports the First Lady's doctor advised that she "curtail all of her official activities" for the remainder of the year.

Waiting at their home on Squaw Island were the Kennedy children, Caroline and John Jr., along with "a new puppy."

JFK+50 NOTE

Mrs. Kennedy gave birth to a baby boy on Aug 7, 1963, but he died on August 9, 1963 due to a respiratory problem common in premature births.

"PUSHED FOR ENACTMENT OF KEY LEGISLATION"

KENNEDY-JOHNSON CALL FOR TEMPORARY HALT TO CAMPAIGN UNTIL AFTER RESUMED SESSION OF CONGRESS

Hyannis Port, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On July 31, 1960, Associated Press reports that Senator John F. Kennedy, Democratic presidential nominee, "pushed (yesterday) for enactment of key legislation at the resumed session of Congress August 8 and said he will put off his active campaigning until afterward."

The Senator appeared yesterday in a joint news conference with Senator Lyndon B. Johnson (D-Texas), his vice-presidential running mate held at the beachfront home of Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. here in Hyannis Port.

JFK+50 NOTE

The key legislation referred to included medical care for the aged, housing, aid to education, mutual security appropriations and the minimum wage. 

Speaking in Chicago on the same day, Republican presidential nominee Vice-President Richard M. Nixon said he has plans to develop a massive program for dealing with the farm problem.

"NEW CANADIAN P.M. IS 'THE LIFE OF THE PARTY'"

LESTER PEARSON EASES 'STRAIN ON U.S.-CANADIAN RELATIONS'

Hyannis Port, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On May 11, 1963, The Evening Star reports that new Canadian prime minister Lester Pearson* hosted a reception last evening for President John F. Kennedy and the press of both the United States and Canada.

David S. Broder describes the prime minister as "the life of the party in Bobby Kennedy's living room" and in the process eased "the strain on U.S.-Canadian relations."

Mr. Pearson then "flew off by helicopter to the President's summer home" here in Hyannis for lunch and "the start of their talks."

JFK+50 NOTE

Upon greeting PM Pearson's arrival to the United States again in May 1963, JFK said "We share a neighbor's pride in the prime minister's career" & welcomed him "as an old friend of the United States."  JFK & Pearson shared a "warm, productive relationship."

*Lester Bowles Pearson (1897-1972) was born in Newtonbrook, Ontario & educated at Victoria University.  LBP served as Canadian ambassador to the U.S. 1944-1946 & won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957.  He served as PM of Canada 1963-1968 & initiated progressive policies.

THE HOPE STILL LIVES & THE DREAM SHALL NEVER DIE

UNCLE TED DIES AT HYANNIS PORT

Hyannis Port, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On August 25, 2009, the last surviving Kennedy brother, Senator Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy*, passed away at his home here in Hyannis Port.  The senator had undergone brain surgery and treatments of chemotherapy and radiation.

Teddy Kennedy, who became a United States senator in 1962 when his brother John F. Kennedy was POTUS, had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in May 2008.  At 47 years, he was the fourth longest-serving US Senator in American history. 

Ted became known as the "lion of the Senate" and championed causes relating to economic and social justice.  He called the fight for universal health care "the cause of my life."    After losing a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1980, Senator Kennedy said...

"...the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die."

John M. Broder of the New York Times, who describes Ted Kennedy as "one of the most effective lawmakers in the history of the Senate," writes that the secret of the Senator's success was "his ability to find Republican allies to get bills passed."

Upon the announcement of Edward M. Kennedy's death, the Kennedy family issued the following statement:

"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and  joyous light of our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism and perseverance will live in our hearts forever.  He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it."


*Edward Moore Kennedy (1932-2009) was born in Boston the youngest of Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy's 9 children.  Because of his father's work movements, Ted attended 10 different schools by age 11.

EMK graduated from Milton Academy in 1950, served in the US Army, and graduated from Harvard with an A.B. in history and government in 1959.
Ted served in the US Senate from 1962 until his death.

SUPPORT OF NATO & A STRONG BILATERAL DEFENSE

JFK CONCLUDES TALKS WITH CANADIAN PM

Hyannis Port (JFK+50) On May 11, 1963, President John F. Kennedy and Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson* concluded two days of talks here at Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.

The two leaders of  neighboring nations of the Western Hemisphere issued a joint statement emphasizing their good relationship.  In the statement, JFK & PM Pearson also indicated continued support of NATO as well as a strong bilateral defense of the hemisphere.

The Prime Minister also indicated a willingness to allow nuclear warheads to be placed on missiles based in Canada.

*Lester Bowles Pearson (1897-1972) was born in York (Toronto) Canada & graduated from the University of Toronto in 1919.  LBP then attended the University of Oxford.  In 1957, LBP won the Nobel Peace Prize for organizing the UN Emergency Force to solve the Suez Canal Crisis.
