KING TUT'S COFFIN REMOVED FROM TOMB IN VALLEY OF KINGS
London (JFK+50) On January 1, 1926, Associated Press reports that the "lid and...golden royal mask" were removed from King Tutankh-Amen's* coffin yesterday for shipment to Cairo.
The mummy will remain in the tomb which will be opened for public viewing tomorrow. Chief excavator Howard Carter estimates the value of the gold contents of the tomb to be about $260,000 (U.S. currency).
*King Tutankhamun (1341-1323 BC) served as Egyptian King 1333-1323 BC & died at the age of 18 thus known as "The Boy King." His reign is considered one of the greatest restoration periods of Egypt.
