"THANKFUL FOR ALL WHO SOUGHT OUT AMERICA AS HOME"

COOLIDGE SAYS FRATERNITY & CO-OPERATION, DESPITE DIVERSITY, CAN WORK WORLD-WIDE

St. Paul, Minnesota (JFK+50) On June 8, 1925, President Calvin Coolidge addressed the Norse-American Centennial* here on the Minnesota State fairgrounds.  His topic was "America's success in fusing national unity from its melting pot of diverse racial elements."

The President said...

"If fraternity and co-operation are possible on the scale of this continent among people so widely diverse, why not on the scale of the world?"

In Mr. Coolidge's view, we as a nation are thankful for ALL "the many...groups that have sought out America for their home."

The President continued...

"Out of the vast differences...there has evolved a spiritual union accompanied by a range of...genius which marks this nation's destiny."

*Norse-American Centennial was held June 6-9, 1925 at the State Fairgrounds in St. Paul, Minnesota.  NAC celebrated the 100th anniversary of organized Norwegian migration to America.

Norway has sent a larger % of her population to the U.S. than any other nation save Ireland.

"MINISTER OBJECTS TO BEER-WINE PLATFORM"

FATHER CALLS FOR DEFEAT OF HIS SON IN U.S. SENATE RACE

Minneapolis, Minnesota (JFK+50) On September 22, 1924, the Associated Press reports the Rev. T.M.C. Birmingham of Milford, Nebraska "has appealed" to Minnesota voters "for the defeat of his son, Merle" who is running as a candidate for the United States Senate.

The younger Mr. Birmingham is advocating for a beer-wine platform.  His father objects to his son running not on "the liberty of the gospel, but the kind that permits transgression and wrongdoing."

JFK+50 NOTE

Merle Birmingham, running as an independent candidate, received 8,620 votes, finishing 4th out of 5 candidates, in the 1924 Minnesota general election.  Republican Thomas P. Schall narrowly defeated Farm-Labor incumbent Magnus Johnson.
