"PAYDIRT RUNNING 1100 OZS OF SILVER TO THE TON"

GOLD & SILVER FIND IN YUKON TOUCHES OFF STAMPEDE

Dawson, Yukon Territory (JFK+50) On December 31, 1923, the Associated Press reports "the Klondyke* is in the throes of another gold and silver rush."

A stampede was started with discovery of silver and gold "at the head of the Beaver River, 50 miles west of Keno Hill."  The stampede was from Keno and Mayo**, the major mining settlement of the Yukon.

The A.P. says "assays have revealed pay dirt running 1100 ounces of silver to the ton."

*The first Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899) saw 100,000 prospectors start out for the Yukon Territory.  30 to 40,000 actually made it with 4000 striking gold or silver & a few hundred becoming rich.

**Mayo, Yukon, Canada, was established in 1903.  It is located along the Silver Trail & Stewart River.  Its 2021 population was 188 persons.

"COMING IN BY DOG SLED OVER DAWSON TRAIL"

YUKON ELECTION RESULT DELAYED

Dawson City*, Yukon Territory (JFK+50) On December 12, 1921, "nearly every telegraph line in the Yukon" was disabled by storms resulting in a delay in tabulating the final election vote.

At the time of the report by the Evening Star, Captain George Black**, conservative, had a majority of the vote over F. T. Congdon, liberal.

The returns from the Mayo Silver Camps, coming in "by dog sled over the Dawson Trail***," will decide the election.

*Dawson City, located on the Yukon River in NW Canada, was base for the Klondike Gold Rush.

**George Black (1873-1965) was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick & served as Commissioner of Yukon 1912-1918.  GB was a Captain in WWI, wounded at the Battle of Amiens.  Member of Parliament 1921-1935 & 1940-1949, & Speaker of the House of Commons 1930-1935,

***Overland Trail was a Klondike gold rush era transportation route between Whitehorse, Yukon & Dawson City in Yukon, Canada.  Built in 1902, OT spanned 330 miles with wide graded surfaces.  Today OT is a recreation route for dog sled teams.
