FDR presents his "Four Freedoms" address to Congress. He says all nations of the world share Americans' right to "freedom of speech & expression, freedom (of) worship, freedom from want & freedom from fear."
The "Four Freedoms" were adopted by the UN in 1948 as a "Universal Declaration of Human Rights".

The 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, dies at Sagamore Hill in Long Island, NY.
TR died in his sleep at age 60. It was said: "It is well TR died in his sleep else there would have been a fight."

Samuel Morse demonstrates the telegraph at the Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown, NJ.
Six years later Morse will send the 1st official telegraph message from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore: "What hath God wrought?"
