UN CONDEMNS RED CHINESE AGGRESSION
The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution today by a vote of 44 to 7 condemning the People's Republic of China for acts of aggression in Korea.
This is the 1st action of its kind by the world organization.
In December 1950, thousands of Chinese troops crossed the Yalu River into North Korea to fight UN forces which had driven North Korean troops out of South Korea.
The resolution calls for China to "cease hostilities against United Nations forces and to withdraw from Korea."*
*The Korean Conflict will continue for another 2 years.

NIXON ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR PRESIDENT
Richard M. Nixon officially announced today that he will seek the Republican nomination for President of the United States.
In 1962, after Mr. Nixon had been defeated by Edmund G. "Pat" Brown for the governorship of California, he announced to the press:
"Gentlemen, this is my last press conference. Just think, you won't have Nixon to kick around anymore."
Six years later, Nixon is once again on the campaign trail. *
*Nixon will win the 1968 Republican nomination & go on to defeat Hubert Humphrey in the general election.

SPACE SHUTTLE BREAKS UP ON REENTRY
Space shuttle "Columbia" broke up on reentry today over Texas resulting in the deaths of all 7 astronauts on board.
During launch on January 16, a piece of foam insulation broke away from the propellant tank & hit the edge of the Columbia's left wing.
Wind & heat caused the wing to blow off during the forces of reentry into the earth's atmosphere.
President Bush said:
"These astronauts knew the dangers and they faced them willingly, knowing they had a high and noble purpose in life."

KING OF PORTUGAL ASSASSINATED
King Carlos I of Portugal and his son, Luis Filpe, were killed today by revolutionaries while riding in an open car through the streets of Lisbon.
Carlos has been king since 1889. Severe economic hardship led to revolts in 1906 & again this year.*
*The King's surviving son, Manoel, will be forced to abdicate & flee to England in October 1910.
