JFK HONORS VENEZUELAN INDEPENDENCE
President John F. Kennedy participated in the 150th anniversary of the independence of Venezuela today.
JFK laid a wreath at the statue of Simon Bolivar, the father of Venezuelan independence located at 18th & Virginia Avenue in Washington, D.C.

"THE MAKING OF THE PRESIDENT, 1960" IS PUBLISHED
Theodore H. White's "The Making of the President, 1960" was published today.
It is an in depth look at the Presidential election of 1960 in which Democrat John F. Kennedy defeated Republican Richard M. Nixon in one of the closest presidential races in history.*
*White's book will win the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction in 1962.

PRESIDENT WANTS SUPPORT FOR MEDICARE
At his news conference in the State Department Auditorium in Washington, D.C. today, President Kennedy called for "strong support for the Senate effort to pass a bill providing medicare for the aged under Social Security."

JFK SPEAKS TO NATION ON TRIP TO EUROPE
President John F. Kennedy tonight gave a televised address to the nation about his recent trip to Europe.
JFK said:
"Today I can report an even deeper tie between the people of Europe & the people of the United States. I heard expressions of confidence in the US from leaders of Germany, England, Italy & Ireland & I felt the....affection that their people have for the people of the United States."

MEMPHIS TRUCK DRIVER RECORDS HIT RECORD
"That's All Right Mama" by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup was recorded today at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee by a young truck driver named Elvis Presley.
Mr. Presley, who made the record as a birthday gift for his mother, paid $3.98 for the recording.
Elvis sang other songs but none were so unique as "That's All Right Mama".*
*Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records, released the record as a single just 2 weeks later & it became an instant hit.

"BIKINI" UNVEILED IN PARIS
French designer Louis Reard unveiled a 2 piece swimsuit today in Paris which he names the "bikini" after the site of an atomic test in the Pacific.
The bikini was modeled by a 19 year old showgirl at the Casino de Paris named Micheline Bernardini.
The swimsuit is made out of 30 square inches of fabric.*
*The bikini did not become popular in the US until the early 1960s when Brian Hyland sang the popular song: "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini".

CHRISTIAN MISSION FOUNDED IN LONDON
Revivalist minister William Booth & his wife Catherine established a Methodist organization today in London named the Christian Mission.
Rev. Booth models his organization after the British army.
Projects such as soup kitchens will provide food for the poor.*
*In 1878, the CM becomes the Salvation Army. It is still based in London today & has branches in 75 countries.
